Shopify shipping zones Australia: postage beyond capitals
Set up Shopify shipping zones as Australian postcode bands, not states. Use Australia Post's 2026 rate card and CSV imports to price remote postcodes.
The short answer: a Shopify shipping zone is a group of destinations that share rates, and Shopify's documentation states that within one shipping profile a country can sit in only one zone. For Australian stores the useful grouping is a postcode cost band, not a state line. Shopify supplies no ready-made remote postcode list: you build bands from Australia Post's rate card and remote handling rules, then paste each band into the zone editor as a postcode condition. One national flat rate makes capital-city orders subsidise parcels bound for Broome or Alice Springs. Price the zones you actually post to, or the remote orders will price you.
A flat national postage number is the most expensive simplicity you can buy. For any store posting past the capitals, the deciding number is the last-leg cost, not the plan fee, and a single rate hides it. Our step-by-step Shopify Australia setup walks the store side; this piece fixes the postage side.
If you're still weighing up the platform itself, what is Shopify in Australia covers that question. Heads up: this guide uses Shopify affiliate links. Sign up through one and we are paid a commission, and you pay exactly the same as you would otherwise. You can open a store at Shopify Australia whenever the postage maths makes sense.
Shopify plans, pricing and features change; always verify the current details on shopify.com before deciding.
What we measured: we read the 13 ranking pages for this topic in full; one more could not be read. We compared what each covers: 7 of the 13 define a zone as a destination grouping, and most stop at definitions. The prices quoted across those pages, mostly in US dollars, varied significantly in our comparison. Almost none price the leg that actually costs money, the run beyond the capitals, and one page we couldn't open might have done.
What a Shopify shipping zone is in Australia
A shipping zone is a group of destinations that share rates: countries, regions or postcodes. Shopify's help pages add the rule that matters here: within one shipping profile, a country or region can live in only one zone. Zones and their rates sit inside shipping profiles, so structure follows products.
The rate types are flat, weight-based, price-based, carrier-calculated and free. Shopify Inc. Shopify Inc. (2026) documentation illustrates various example order amount-based rates; the principle travels, the currency doesn't. In Australia, a zone should describe a cost, so the boundaries belong on postcodes, not the map. Sydney to Bondi and Sydney to Broken Hill are both "NSW" and not remotely the same freight.
Why state borders make bad postage bands
State zones flatter the map and punish the ledger. Western Australia as one band averages Perth metro against Kununurra, and the average is a lie for both ends: the metro customer overpays, the remote one quietly costs you money. Queensland does the same trick from Coolangatta to Cape York.
In the merchant threads we read, the recurring confession is exactly this: "We're currently undercharging across different states and it's starting to add up." The shortfall doesn't announce itself. It leaks a few dollars per parcel until somebody checks the postage line against sales and gets a surprise. Postcode bands close the leak because the band boundary sits where the cost boundary sits.
Read Australia Post's rate card like a postcode map
Australia Post's pricing update has taken effect, so any band you built earlier is quoting outdated costs. The rate material is published per origin, not per country: there's a parcel post guide for Melbourne V1 origins and another for near-QLD Q2, checked on 12 September 2026. That structure is the thesis in miniature: the price depends on where the parcel starts and the band it lands in.
Bulky goods are charged on cubic weight where it beats actual weight, and Australia Post's guides set out the calculation, so weigh the packed carton rather than the product. Remote handling flags certain postcodes for extra cost rather than a flat national bump. Australia Post's postcode data is the raw material for drawing your bands.
Here's our suggested starter worksheet; fill the brackets from the current guides:
- Band 1, capital metro: postcodes [...] → capital-city price + margin.
- Band 2, regional: postcodes [...] → regional price + margin.
- Band 3, remote: postcodes [...] → remote price + surcharge + margin.
- Edge case: postcodes the guides don't price cleanly → pickup or a manual quote.
Bulk-import Australian postcodes without an app
Spreadsheet first, admin second. The zone editor takes destinations per zone, so paste your bands in one at a time and skip paid importers entirely. In the threads we read, one merchant tallied a $50 monthly bill for what he called a very basic multi-carrier app; the CSV route costs you an afternoon and nothing after. Our Shopify app costs guide prices the alternatives in AUD.
The path in Shopify's documentation:
- Open Settings, then Shipping and delivery, and select the profile your domestic products use.
- Click Add zone and name it for the cost band, not the map: "metro", "regional", "remote".
- Add Australia as the destination, then paste the band's postcodes, comma-separated, from your spreadsheet.
- Save the zone and attach its rate: the band's guide price plus your margin.
- Repeat per band until every postcode you post to sits somewhere.
- Keep a rest-of-Australia catch-all at your highest rate so nothing ships unpriced.
Compare carriers for a remote 15 kg parcel
For a 15 kg carton from Sydney to a remote WA postcode, the deciding numbers are the base rate plus whatever remote handling rides on top. Australia Post is the carrier Shopify lists for Australian fulfilment locations, and activating its calculated rates requires a MyPost Business account; Shopify's Australia Post page notes eParcel accounts aren't currently supported. The plan gate is real: calculated shipping needs Advanced or Plus. It isn't on Basic or Starter. Grow stores get it by switching to yearly billing or paying a monthly fee, according to that page, checked on 12 September 2026. Our plans comparison totals what that upgrade means in AUD.
| Route | How the 15 kg remote rate is set | Remote handling | Fits postcode bands? (our call) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australia Post, calculated at checkout | Priced from the origin–destination pair; needs MyPost Business | Applied under AusPost's own rules | Closest fit, but plan-gated |
| Sendle | Quoted by size tier, not destination remoteness | Varies by route | Partial: tiers ignore remoteness |
| Courier, quoted per consignment | Manual quote per job | Built into the quote | Poor fit at checkout |
| Postcode-band flat rates (our method) | You set it from the rate guides | Recovered inside the band | Best fit: the zone is the price |
In the threads we read, the angriest recurring complaint is integration itself. One merchant from overseas carriers was appalled at how little connects Shopify and Australia Post without apps, plan upgrades or CSV wrangling. We'd add the counterpoint: a quoted freight number for heavy remote consignments is a feature, not a defeat.
Our take: past roughly 10 kg, stop chasing live rates and quote the band. Flat postcode rates built from the guides recover costs predictably, with calculated rates as a check rather than a crutch; stores on Basic shouldn't upgrade plans just to fetch live postage. Stores with daily remote freight are the exception: ring a courier, and put that negotiated number in the remote band.
Set local pickup for customers outside your zones
Some postcodes won't price sensibly at any flat rate. For those customers, the deciding question is distance: inside your own suburb, pickup or local delivery works; beyond it, offer a quote instead of a loss. Shopify's local pickup and local delivery settings handle the near case.
Careful with profiles, because rates stack across them. Shopify's documentation gives the worked example: two active $5 USD discounted rates in different profiles combine to a $10 USD rate on a $55 USD order at checkout. Quarantine pickup inside the same profile as your zones. Strip your own postcodes out of the national bands, or a local customer will see both rates and pick the free one. That's not stinginess; it's boundary hygiene.
Pass remote surcharges to the right customers
The point of bands is surgical recovery: the remote cost lands on the remote order, and nobody else notices. Worked illustration, ours not a quoted rate: if remote orders are 5 % of volume and the extra leg costs A$15 a parcel, spreading it nationally adds A$0.75 to every order. Charging the remote band recovers a similar amount of money and leaves the vast majority of customers untouched.
Thresholds multiply the damage, so set them per band. Shopify's own example of free shipping over $100 USD is fine for metro-heavy stores and brutal for a remote band pricing real freight; our free shipping maths runs that arithmetic in AUD. One bookkeeping note: postage you charge is still revenue, and the ATO is where the GST turnover answer lives.
Test your Shopify shipping zones before launch
Zones are config, and config lies until tested. Pick three real addresses: one capital metro, one regional, one remote. Run a test checkout to each and check the rate shown matches the band you intended, on mobile as well as desktop, because that's where most of your customers will see it.
Then diarise the re-test. Australia Post repriced effective 1 July 2026, and every band built on the old card is now quoting stale numbers. A zone set is a living document; treat it like one and the postage line stops being where your margin goes to retire.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Australia Post charge for a 15 kg parcel to remote WA?
There's no single figure: the price is set by the origin–destination pair, which is why Australia Post publishes a separate guide per origin region, such as its express guide for mid-WA W2. Pull your origin's guide and your destination band from it. Any rate you copied before 1 July 2026 is out of date.
Can a product sit in two shipping zones at once?
Not directly: within one shipping profile, Shopify allows a country in one zone only, and zones are destination-based, not collection-based. Free shipping to New Zealand alongside flat Australian rates works because they're different destination zones. For different products needing different rates, run a second shipping profile.
Do I need a paid app to show Australia Post rates at checkout?
Three routes exist. The native one connects Australia Post through Shopify's carrier account with a MyPost Business login, but calculated rates require Advanced or Plus, or Grow on yearly billing. The free route is flat rates on postcode bands built from the guides, which costs an afternoon rather than a subscription.
How do I work out what share of my orders go to remote postcodes?
Filter your Shopify orders by the customer's shipping postcode and sort into your three bands; the remote share usually surprises people. Same arithmetic, different input: at a 10 % remote share with A$15 extra a parcel, a national flat rate hides A$1.50 in every order. Once you can see the share, you can price it.
