Set up Australia Post shipping in Shopify
Connect Australia Post to Shopify in 10 minutes, then configure zones and rates. Parcel Post delivers in 2-6 business days, per Australia Post's service pages.
The short answer: To set up Australia Post shipping in Shopify, connect a MyPost Business account and generate a merchant token, then configure shipping zones and rates that reflect your real costs. The connection takes about 10 minutes and works on any Shopify plan. The part that trips people up is rate configuration, not the connection itself. Australia Post's Parcel Post delivers in 2-6 business days and Express Post in 1-3 business days, according to Australia Post's service pages, checked on 25 August 2026. The integration is free to set up, and rates are charged through your Australia Post account. International freight carries specific GST treatment: the ATO's 2016 guidance states that international transport of goods into Australia is GST-free to the place of consignment.
Most guides for Shopify how to set up shipping walk you through the connection and stop there. The connection is the easy part. If you're starting from scratch, our Shopify Australia: set up your store step by step covers the broader setup. If you're new to the platform entirely, What is Shopify, and how does it work in Australia? is a good primer.
Heads up: this guide uses Shopify affiliate links. Sign up through one and we earn a commission, and you pay exactly the same as you would otherwise. You can start at https://www.shopify.com/au if you're still setting up.
Shopify plans, pricing and features change; always verify the current details on shopify.com before deciding.
The real work starts after the token is pasted. A parcel to a Brisbane postcode and a parcel to a remote Western Australian postcode are not the same cost. Flat rates quietly average the two. Calculated rates are safer but need your packaging dimensions and weights to be accurate. That's where this guide spends its time.
The connection is the easy 10 minutes
Australia Post's Shopify integration page, checked on 25 August 2026, describes the connection as a three-step process: create a MyPost Business account, generate a token, and paste it into Shopify. That's the whole connection.
It's free to set up. It works on any Shopify plan. You don't need carrier-calculated shipping as a separate feature. One limitation: eParcel accounts are not supported. You need a MyPost Business account specifically.
What the integration gives you is label printing inside Shopify, pre-filled with order details, and access to MyPost Business savings bands. What it doesn't do is decide your rates for you. That's the part worth slowing down for.
The connection is a plumbing job. The rates are the business decision. Most guides treat them as the same task. They aren't.
Prerequisites: MyPost Business and your merchant token
Two things before you touch Shopify. Both are free.
A MyPost Business account is created on the Australia Post website. You'll need an Australian Business Number (ABN). The account gives you access to business-rate postage and the savings bands that come with volume. Australia Post's size and weight guidelines, checked on 25 August 2026, set the physical limits for what you can send through the domestic network. Check those limits before you configure anything in Shopify.
The merchant token is generated inside MyPost Business. Navigate to eCommerce Partners, select Shopify, and click Connect. The system produces a token: a string of characters linking your Australia Post account to your Shopify store. Copy it. You'll paste it into Shopify in the next step.
Tokens can be regenerated. If you create a new one, the old token stops working immediately. Keep a record of which token is active. Don't share it — it's the key to your postage account.
Connect Australia Post in Shopify admin
This is the 10-minute part. Here are the core steps:
- Create a MyPost Business account at auspost.com.au using your ABN.
- Log in to MyPost Business and navigate to eCommerce Partners > Shopify > Connect.
- Copy the merchant token that appears on screen.
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery > Carrier accounts.
- Select Australia Post from the carrier list and paste your merchant token.
- Click Connect to validate the token against Australia Post's system.
- Set up shipping zones and rates, covered in the next two sections.
No API keys to manage. No webhooks to configure. The integration handles communication between Shopify and Australia Post in the background.
Once connected, Shopify can pull live rates from your Australia Post account at checkout — but only if you add carrier-calculated rates to your shipping zones. The connection alone doesn't add rates to your checkout. It makes them available.
The connection works on any Shopify plan. If you're still comparing tiers, Shopify plans compared: the real cost for Australian sellers breaks down what each costs in AUD. The integration itself doesn't add to your plan price.
Set up shipping zones that reflect your real dispatch areas
This is where the connection stops being trivial.
Shipping zones in Shopify are geographic groups. Each zone gets its own rate rules. A domestic zone might cover all Australian postcodes. An international zone might cover New Zealand separately from the rest of the world.
For domestic shipping, Australia Post offers two services through the integration. Parcel Post delivers in 2-6 business days, according to Australia Post's business page, checked on 25 August 2026. Express Post delivers in 1-3 business days, per the same source. Both are available as calculated rates once the carrier account is connected.
For international shipping, Australia Post's International Standard and International Express services cover a country list published on auspost.com.au. Not every destination supports every service. Check the country list before promising delivery to a specific nation.
GST treatment of international freight matters here. The ATO's 2016 guidance on GST and international freight transport states that the international transport of goods into Australia is GST-free from a place outside Australia to the place of consignment. The same guidance says loading, handling and facilitation services during international transport are GST-free when supplied to a non-resident recipient. Outbound freight gets the same treatment: the ATO states that international transport from the place of export in Australia to a destination outside Australia is GST-free.
Domestic legs differ. The ATO notes that subcontractors providing domestic transport within Australia without arranging international transport make a taxable supply. Services provided by an Australian supplier to an Australian customer after the place of consignment are generally taxable. If you're unsure how GST applies, our GST on your Shopify store: an Australian guide covers the broader picture.
The ATO also defines the value of a taxable importation. It includes the customs value, transport and insurance to the place of consignment, loading and handling up to that place, and any customs duty payable. This matters if you import stock to sell.
Choose a rate strategy that doesn't quietly eat your margin
Three ways to set rates after connecting Australia Post. Each has a trade-off.
A flat rate charges every order in a zone the same amount. Simple to set up. It quietly loses money on heavy parcels to remote postcodes and overcharges on light parcels to nearby suburbs.
Weight-based rates step up at thresholds you define. More accurate than flat. Still doesn't account for distance within Australia, which is a big country.
Calculated rates pull live quotes from your Australia Post account at checkout. The most accurate option. Requires product weights and packaging dimensions to be correct in Shopify.
| Strategy | Setup effort | Accuracy | Margin risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flat rate | Low | Low | High on heavy or remote orders | Low-volume stores, uniform products |
| Weight-based | Medium | Medium | Medium on remote postcodes | Mixed product weights, domestic only |
| Calculated (Australia Post) | Medium | High | Low | Most stores, especially with varied destinations |
Our take: Calculated rates are the safest default for Australian stores. This is because a flat rate cannot absorb the cost difference between a 500g parcel to Sydney and a 5kg parcel to a remote postcode. If you're starting out with a single product and uniform packaging, a flat rate is fine while you find your feet. The moment you add a second product weight or ship outside your home state, switch to calculated.
Our suggested rate-setup checklist:
- Enter accurate weights for every product variant in Shopify.
- Set default package weights and dimensions in Settings > Shipping.
- Create a domestic zone covering all Australian postcodes.
- Add Australia Post calculated rates for Parcel Post and Express Post.
- Create an international zone for each region you ship to.
- Verify the country list on auspost.com.au before enabling international rates.
- Place a test order and check the checkout quote against your Australia Post account.
- Review rates quarterly, as Australia Post updates its rate card periodically.
When the checkout quote doesn't match: troubleshooting
Three common failures. All fixable.
Token not working. The most common cause is a regenerated token. If you created a new merchant token in MyPost Business, the old one is dead. Copy the current token from MyPost Business > eCommerce Partners > Shopify, and re-enter it in Shopify under Settings > Shipping and delivery > Carrier accounts.
Rates not appearing at checkout. Check that you've added carrier-calculated rates to your shipping zones, not just connected the account. The connection makes rates available; it doesn't activate them. Open each zone and confirm Australia Post rates are listed under the rate rules.
Also check product weights. Calculated rates need a weight for every variant. A product with zero weight returns a zero or missing rate, and the customer sees nothing at checkout.
Label errors. If label printing fails, verify the shipping address is complete and correctly formatted. Australia Post requires a valid postcode. Also check that your parcel doesn't exceed Australia Post's size and weight guidelines, checked on 25 August 2026. Parcels over 22kg or 105cm combined length and girth can't be sent as standard Parcel Post.
Print labels and fulfil orders without leaving Shopify
Once rates are live and orders arrive, the label workflow stays inside Shopify.
Open an order in the Shopify admin. Click Create shipping label. Shopify pulls the customer's address, your product weights, and your default package dimensions. Select the Australia Post service: Parcel Post or Express Post for domestic, International Standard or International Express for overseas. The label price is charged to your Australia Post account.
Print the label. Mark the order as fulfilled. Shopify sends the tracking number to the customer automatically.
For bulk fulfilment, select multiple orders from the orders list, choose Create shipping labels, and print them in one batch. Each label generates individually but the workflow is batched. You're not opening each order one at a time.
To void a label, open the order's fulfilment detail page and select the void option. Voided labels are credited back to your Australia Post account, though processing time for the credit varies.
The whole flow stays in one place. Connection, rates, checkout, labels, fulfilment. That's the point of the integration. You set it up once, and the day-to-day work doesn't require jumping between Shopify and the Australia Post portal.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Australia Post shipping cost through Shopify?
Rates come from your MyPost Business account, not from Shopify. The cost depends on your savings band, parcel weight, dimensions, destination postcode, and service type. Australia Post doesn't publish a single public rate card for MyPost Business accounts. You see the actual rate when you generate a label or pull a calculated quote at checkout.
Can I use Australia Post with Shopify Shipping?
No. Shopify Shipping is Shopify's own discounted label service, available in the US and Canada. In Australia, the Australia Post integration is the equivalent, but it uses your own MyPost Business account rather than Shopify's negotiated rates. The two systems are separate and don't interact.
Does the Australia Post Shopify integration work for international stores?
The integration is designed for Australian-based Shopify stores dispatching from Australia. If your store is based outside Australia, Australia Post's domestic services don't apply. International receiving services depend on the destination country appearing on Australia Post's published country list, and not all services are available to all destinations.
How do I set up Australia Post shipping zones at checkout?
In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery. Each shipping zone maps to a set of rate rules. For domestic, create one zone covering all Australian postcodes. For international, create separate zones by region, such as New Zealand, North America, and Europe, then add Australia Post calculated rates to each. The checkout only shows rates for the zone matching the customer's delivery address.
How do I print Australia Post labels in bulk?
Select multiple orders from the Shopify orders list, choose Create shipping labels, and print. You can print to a thermal label printer or standard A4, depending on the label format you select in your Shopify shipping settings. A single batch can handle up to 50 orders.
