When not to install Selleasy on your Shopify store

Selleasy pays off only with real order volume and impulse-buy products. Under 50 monthly orders, USD fees and refund paperwork cost more than the upsells earn.

The short answer: Selleasy only earns its keep once your store has the order volume, margin, and impulse-buy products to support it. Below that line, the app fee, page-load drag, and refund paperwork quietly cancel out the extra revenue. Selleasy's App Store listing, checked on 1 September 2026, offers a free plan covering up to 50 orders per month.

Paid tiers charge US$9, US$19, or US$29 per 30-day billing cycle depending on your order band, with a 30-day trial included. You're billed in US dollars, not Australian. Every charge converts against your AUD revenue. This guide sets out where installing it is the wrong call, and what to do instead.

Australia's monthly online retail revenue sat just over A$4.49 billion in May 2025, according to Statista, barely under the A$4.52 billion peak recorded the month before. That's a large pie, and upsell apps promise you a thicker slice. The promise holds only if your orders, margins, and product type can carry the cost.

A 2024 survey cited by Statista found around 68 % of Australian participants named convenience as their primary reason for shopping online. Upsells trade on that impulse. But impulse is fragile, and the app's billing is in USD against your AUD revenue, a mismatch most guides gloss over.

If you're still finding your feet, our What is Shopify, and how does it work in Australia? guide covers the platform basics. For the setup itself, our Shopify Australia: set up your store step by step walkthrough takes you through it.

The short answer — Selleasy is a volume play

Selleasy is a post-purchase and checkout upsell app built by Logbase, a developer based in India. It shows customers add-on offers after they complete their purchase, the prompt that appears once payment goes through.

The pitch is simple. Each accepted upsell lifts your average order value without a new ad campaign. The cost is a monthly fee scaled to your order volume. The catch is that the fee, the script weight, and the compliance paperwork all hit you whether the upsells convert or not.

This is a threshold question, not a feature review. Below a certain order count, the fixed costs exceed the uplift. Above it, the app can pay for itself. The rest of this guide works out where that line sits for an Australian store.

When Selleasy doesn't earn its keep on your Shopify store

Selleasy's App Store listing, checked on 1 September 2026, offers a free plan covering up to 50 orders per month. Past that, billing is US$9, US$19, or US$29 per 30-day cycle, scaled to your order band. A 30-day trial applies on the paid tiers, and charges are in USD every 30 days. The App Store listing is authoritative; the developer can change these figures, and we'd check again before installing.

Here's where the maths bites. Say your store processes 80 orders a month with an AOV of A$85. A 15 % upsell acceptance rate, generous for a shop that recently crossed 50 orders, on an A$20 add-on offer generates A$240 in upsell revenue. The US$9 tier converts to roughly A$14 at the time of writing. That leaves a surplus of A$226 before you account for script drag, refund reconciliation, and the hours spent configuring offers.

Now halve the acceptance rate to 7.5 %, closer to what a new store with a thin product range might see. Upsell revenue drops to A$120. The fee stays at A$14. The surplus shrinks to A$106, and that's before a single refund, a single theme conflict, or a single hour of your time.

Three worked monthly bills (AOV A$85, upsell offer A$20, illustrative USD to AUD at US$1 ≈ A$1.50):

Monthly orders Selleasy tier Fee (AUD approx.) Upsell revenue at 15 % Upsell revenue at 7.5 % Net at 7.5 %
40 Free A$0 A$120 A$60 +A$60
80 US$9 ~A$14 A$240 A$120 +A$106
300 US$29 ~A$44 A$900 A$450 +A$406

The surplus survives even at 7.5 %. But this table counts only the monthly fee. It doesn't count the refund paperwork, the GST reconciliation, the script weight on your theme, or the opportunity cost of hours spent configuring offers that convert at half the rate you hoped.

The real break-even isn't fee versus revenue. It's fee plus overhead versus revenue minus returns. For a store doing 60 to 100 orders a month, the absolute upside is A$100 to A$200. The operational drag can eat most of that.

Our suggested pre-install checklist:

  • Monthly order count above 50 for the past three months.
  • Average order value above A$60.
  • Products are impulse-buy or add-on type, not custom or made-to-order.
  • You can absorb USD billing against AUD revenue without reconciliation pain.
  • You have a process for refunding upsell orders through Shopify's order admin.
  • Your theme is compatible with app-injected scripts.

High-consideration products don't suit one-click asks

Upsells work on impulse. A customer who just bought a A$30 candle can be offered a A$12 matchbook. The same customer who just spent A$400 on a made-to-order ring cannot be offered a A$80 engraving upgrade with a one-click prompt. They can, but the prompt reads as pushy, not helpful.

Baymard Institute's large-scale checkout testing, published in 2026, found that 66 % of users who encountered a separate cross-sell step at Amazon exhibited extreme frustration. The same research found that 52 % of desktop sites don't do enough to improve the relevance of cross-sells in the cart.

Nielsen Norman Group's checkout report, also published in 2026, draws on user research across 350-plus e-commerce websites. Its findings consistently show that irrelevant add-on offers erode trust at the moment you need it most.

The product types that suit Selleasy are the ones a customer doesn't need to think about. Consumables, accessories, matching items, small upgrades. The types that don't are custom, configurable, or B2B, anything where the purchase itself required deliberation.

A one-click upsell on a considered purchase doesn't lift revenue. It lifts your bounce rate at the most fragile moment in the funnel.

Shopify's native upsell covers the basics

Shopify includes post-purchase upsell capabilities for stores using Shopify Payments as their payment processor. There's no separate app subscription, no third-party script, and no USD billing cycle to reconcile against your AUD revenue. The feature lives inside Shopify's admin, and upsell orders flow through the same order management as your regular sales.

For stores already on Shopify Payments, the native option covers the most common use case: a single post-purchase offer on the thank-you page. It won't do everything Selleasy does. No checkout upsells, no multi-language offer logic, no order-band tiered billing. But it also won't add a third-party script to your theme or complicate your refund workflow.

GST, refunds, and disputes are your problem, not the app's

Every upsell Selleasy processes is a taxable sale under Australian law. The app doesn't calculate, collect, or remit GST on your behalf. That runs through your Shopify tax settings and your own ATO reporting. If you're registered for GST, upsell revenue is part of your GST turnover.

The ATO sets the GST registration threshold at A$75,000 in annual turnover, as of 2025. Once your turnover reaches or is likely to reach that figure, you must register within 21 days. Voluntary registration is possible below the threshold, but the ATO requires you to stay registered for at least 12 months if you take it. Registration can be backdated only four years, unless fraud or evasion is involved. The GST framework itself is established in the A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999, per the Federal Register of Legislation.

Refunds complicate things further. When a customer returns an order that included an upsell, the refund flows through Shopify's order admin. The upsell component may not reconcile cleanly with Selleasy's order-band billing. If you're on a tier that counts fulfilled orders, a refunded upsell may still count toward your band, pushing you into a higher fee bracket for orders you didn't keep.

Under the Australian Consumer Law, goods and services are covered if purchased for less than A$100,000, according to the Legal Services Commission of South Australia. A claim for loss or damage must be lodged within six years. A consumer claim under A$12,000 is classed as a minor civil claim, and lawyers aren't permitted to appear at trial for those matters. The ACCC's guidance on consumer rights and guarantees confirms these protections apply to all goods and services sold to consumers within the threshold.

These thresholds apply to your upsell sales as much as to your main catalogue. The app doesn't change your obligations. It adds more transactions to manage them across.

Hidden costs: page load, theme conflicts, and data

Every third-party Shopify app adds scripts to your storefront. Selleasy is no exception. The app injects JavaScript for its upsell and cross-sell widgets, and that code loads on pages where customers are making decisions. We don't have independent benchmark data for Selleasy's specific load impact. Shopify does not publish per-app performance figures. But any added script adds weight, and weight costs conversion, especially on mobile connections common across Australian networks.

Theme conflicts are the other hidden tax. Selleasy requires manual configuration or a free call setup, and not every Shopify theme plays nicely with app-injected blocks. If your theme uses a customised checkout or a heavily modified cart template, the app's widgets may not render correctly. The App Store listing doesn't list incompatible themes by name, and we won't either. But the risk is real for stores on bespoke or older themes.

Data obligations matter too. A small business for Privacy Act purposes is one with an annual turnover of A$3 million or less, according to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. The OAIC's checklist treats a business as needing to comply if its annual turnover has exceeded A$3,000,000 in any financial year since 2002. Below that threshold, the Privacy Act's obligations are lighter, but they're not zero. A third-party app processing customer data adds a layer you're responsible for.

Selleasy supports multi-language and multi-currency displays, which helps if you're selling internationally. But the billing is still in USD, the developer is in India, and the data processing happens outside Australian jurisdiction. That doesn't disqualify the app. It means you carry the compliance load, not the developer.

Signs you've outgrown the threshold

This isn't a "never install" guide. It's a "not yet" guide. Selleasy can earn its keep, but only after your store clears a few bars.

You're ready to revisit Selleasy when your monthly order count has sat above 200 for three consecutive months and your AOV is above A$80. You should also revisit us if your products are impulse-buy or add-on type and you've exhausted what Shopify's native upsell can do. You're also ready if your refund rate is under 5 % and you have a clean process for reconciling USD app billing against AUD revenue.

You're not ready when you're still on the free plan and haven't crossed 50 orders. You're also not ready if your products are custom or made-to-order, your theme is bespoke or recently migrated, or you're not yet registered for GST. Finally, you're not ready if the admin overhead of tracking upsell revenue would cost you more time than the upsells earn.

The app's 30-day trial lets you test the paid tiers without committing. Treat the trial as a data-gathering exercise, not a sales proof. Track your upsell conversion rate, your refund rate on upsold orders, and the time you spend on configuration. If the numbers work at trial volume, they'll work at scale. If they don't, uninstall before the first paid cycle charges your card.

Frequently asked questions

How does Selleasy handle billing when an upsell order is refunded?

Selleasy's billing is tied to your order band. The tier you're on depends on how many orders you process per 30-day cycle. If an order is refunded or cancelled after it's been counted, the app doesn't automatically issue a credit. You may pay a higher tier than your fulfilled order count justifies. The App Store listing doesn't specify a refund-credit mechanism, and we'd confirm the policy with Logbase before relying on it.

Does Selleasy calculate and remit Australian GST on upsell transactions?

No. Selleasy processes the upsell as a Shopify order, and your Shopify tax settings determine whether GST is calculated. The app itself doesn't register for GST, remit to the ATO, or generate a BAS-ready summary. If your turnover exceeds A$75,000, you're responsible for GST on the upsell revenue. The app's multi-currency display doesn't change this.

What page-load impact does Selleasy have on a standard Shopify theme?

We don't have independent benchmark data for Selleasy's specific load impact, and Shopify doesn't publish per-app performance figures. Any third-party app that injects JavaScript into your post-purchase pages adds weight. The practical step is to test your store's load time before and after installation using Shopify's built-in Lighthouse report, and to check whether the app's widgets load asynchronously or block rendering.

Can I use Selleasy if my store isn't registered for GST?

Yes, but the upsell revenue still counts toward your GST turnover. If you're voluntarily registered, the ATO requires you to stay registered for at least 12 months. If you're not registered at all, you still need to track upsell revenue against the A$75,000 threshold. Crossing it means registering within 21 days, and backdating is limited to four years unless fraud or evasion is involved.
