The short answer: Rapid Search — listed on the Shopify App Store as "RS: AI Search Bar & Filter" — provides AI-powered search and product filtering for Shopify stores. Its free tier includes 2,000 monthly sessions and 5,000 products, with paid tiers from US$14 a month, according to the listing checked on 31 August 2026. The app bills in USD every 30 days, so your real cost is the Shopify plan in AUD plus the app charge converted and potentially GST-added. A new store on a Basic plan running the free tier pays nothing extra for search. Upgrade only when sessions consistently exceed 2,000.

Rapid Search adds autocomplete, synonym matching and faceted filtering to your storefront. It indexes your product catalogue and returns results as customers type. The app is one of several search tools on the App Store, and its pricing is tiered by monthly sessions rather than a flat rate.

Most cost guides treat an app subscription as a single line item. That misses the point. The real monthly cost is the app tier your traffic demands, layered on the cheapest Shopify plan that can run it. Our Shopify Australia setup guide covers the plan choice in detail — here we're focused on what Rapid Search adds to that bill.

Australia's retail turnover was A$37,906.6 million in June 2025, up 4.9% year-on-year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. On mobile, where much of Australian browsing happens, a slow or irrelevant search result is a lost sale. Australia Post or StarTrack handle the parcel once the order lands — but a search app determines whether it lands at all. If you're new to the platform, what Shopify is and how it works in Australia is a separate question. This page assumes you've chosen Shopify and want to know what search costs on top.

The real monthly cost is a sum, not a single number

The question "what does Rapid Search cost" has two honest answers. Plans range from a free tier to various paid monthly or annual options. The real price is that figure plus your Shopify plan, plus whatever GST and currency conversion add to the bill.

An app subscription is not your only recurring cost. Shopify's cost in Australia includes the plan, payment processing and postage. Apps sit on top of all three. A search app that costs US$14 a month but drives no additional conversions is money down.

The case for paying rests on whether your current search is losing sales. The Baymard Institute found that a significant portion of e-commerce sites have "mediocre or worse" search UX. The same research notes that 80% of sites provide search autocomplete, yet only 19% achieve the highest performance tier. Bad search is common. Paying for good search only matters if you'll configure it properly.

Rapid Search cost per month: what the App Store listing says

The App Store listing for RS: AI Search Bar & Filter, checked on 31 August 2026, lays out four tiers. The Free plan includes 2,000 monthly sessions and up to 5,000 products. The first paid tier costs $14 USD per month, or $140 USD per year, and includes 5,000 monthly sessions. The next is US$27 a month or US$270 annually, covering 12,000 sessions. The top tier shown costs US$39 a month or US$390 a year, with 25,000 sessions. The paid tiers raise the product ceiling to 100,000.

All charges are billed in USD, with recurring charges processed every 30 days. Paid plans come with a 14-day free trial.

Prices can change. The listing is the authoritative source, and we have quoted the pricing as it appeared on the site.

Annual billing saves roughly 17% versus paying monthly. A year of the US$14 tier at monthly billing totals US$168; the annual plan is US$140. The same save-17% pattern appears on the two higher tiers, US$270 against US$324 and US$390 against US$468.

Can you run Rapid Search on the Basic plan?

Yes. Rapid Search is available without plan-level restrictions. The app installs on any Shopify plan, including Basic, which is available via monthly or annual billing, according to Shopify's Australian pricing page, checked on 6 August 2026.

Basic is the cheapest Shopify plan that gives you a full online store. According to Shopify, it includes hosting, SSL, unlimited products and 24/7 support. It doesn't include additional staff accounts — you get the account owner only. Grow adds five staff accounts, Advanced adds 15, and Plus includes unlimited. None of that affects whether Rapid Search will install and run.

Shopify also offers a Starter plan at a lower price point, but it only supports social and link-in-bio selling — no full storefront. Rapid Search needs a storefront, so Starter is out.

According to Shopify, for enterprise stores, Shopify Plus starts from roughly US$2,300 a month (about A$3,700). It adds checkout customisation, expansion stores and lower transaction rates. A store on Plus wouldn't be choosing Rapid Search on cost grounds alone — but the app's top tier at US$39 a month is a rounding error against a Plus subscription.

Shopify Payments in Australia is available on every plan. Using it avoids Shopify's third-party gateway surcharge, which is a separate saving worth noting when you tally the full bill.

GST and USD billing: what Australian merchants skip

Rapid Search bills in USD. Shopify's billing system converts the charge to AUD on your invoice, and the exchange rate is set by Shopify at billing time — not by your bank.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) states that businesses must register for GST once their GST turnover reaches A$75,000, and non-profit organisations face a higher threshold of A$150,000 per year. The ATO also notes that businesses have 21 days to register after exceeding the threshold.

Whether GST applies to app charges converted from USD depends on Shopify's GST registration for digital services in Australia. If you're GST-registered, you can typically claim input credits for GST on business expenses — but that's a question for your accountant, not a search app guide.

The practical point: budget for conversion plus potential GST. A US$14 monthly charge is not A$14. At a rough exchange rate, expect around A$21 to A$23 including GST. The exact figure depends on the rate on the day Shopify bills you.

Don't install a paid search app if your store has fewer than 2,000 monthly sessions. The free tier exists for that profile, and paying for extra sessions you won't use is wasted budget.

Don't install it if your catalogue is small enough that Shopify's native search handles it. A store with 50 products doesn't need AI-powered filtering. The Baymard Institute found in 2026 that 80% of e-commerce sites provide search autocomplete, yet only 19% achieve the highest performance. Most sites pay for search and still deliver a mediocre experience. Installing the app is not the same as configuring it well.

Don't install it if you're not prepared to maintain the filter setup. Tags, collections and metafields need to be consistent for filtered search to return useful results. An unmaintained filter set is worse than none.

Cheaper alternatives exist on the App Store, including Searchanise and Smart Product Filter & Search. We can't compare their pricing in a table here because we haven't verified their current listings. If your only criterion is the lowest monthly cost, check those listings directly and compare session limits and features against Rapid Search's tiers.

Worked totals: what three AU stores actually pay

Here's where the maths meets the bill. The table below pairs each Rapid Search tier with the Shopify plan that typically matches its user profile. App costs are approximate — converted from USD at roughly US$1 = A$1.50, with 10% GST applied. Actual billing depends on Shopify's conversion rate on the day.

Shopify plan Rapid Search tier Sessions included App cost (approx. AUD/mo) Combined monthly (approx. AUD) Who this suits
Basic — A$56 Free 2,000 A$0 A$56 New stores, solo sellers testing demand

What to do when your store outgrows the free tier

The upgrade rule is simple: move up a tier only when your monthly sessions exceed the current cap for two consecutive months. One spike from a promotion doesn't justify a permanent cost increase.

Our suggested upgrade checklist:

  1. Check your session count in the Rapid Search dashboard weekly for the first 60 days.
  2. If sessions exceed 2,000 in a single month, note it but don't upgrade yet.
  3. If sessions exceed the Free plan's limit for two consecutive months, move to the US$14 tier (5,000 sessions).
  4. Before upgrading, review whether your filter configuration is driving the traffic — or whether sessions are landing on search and bouncing.
  5. If sessions exceed 5,000 consistently, move to the US$27 tier (12,000 sessions) and audit your catalogue structure.
  6. If sessions exceed 12,000 consistently, move to the US$39 tier (25,000 sessions) and consider whether you also need a higher Shopify plan for staff or reporting.

More effective search means more orders. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) reminds businesses that consumers automatically receive consumer guarantees when they buy goods and services, and businesses cannot take these rights away. Better search doesn't change that obligation — but it does scale the volume of orders those guarantees apply to.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Rapid Search cost in AUD per month for an Australian Shopify store?

The free tier costs nothing. The first paid tier, Basic 1, is US$14 a month — roughly A$21 to A$23 including GST, depending on the exchange rate Shopify applies at billing time. Basic 2 is US$27 (about A$41 to A$45) and Basic 3 is US$39 (about A$59 to A$65). All charges are billed in USD every 30 days, so the AUD figure on your invoice will vary with the rate.

Can I use Rapid Search on the Shopify Basic plan, or do I need Grow or Advanced?

Basic works fine. Rapid Search installs on any Shopify plan, and there's no plan-level gate on the app. Basic at A$56 a month gives you a full storefront with hosting, SSL and unlimited products — everything the app needs to run. You'd only move to Grow or Advanced for staff accounts, lower card processing rates or advanced reporting, not because Rapid Search requires it.

Is the 2,000-session free Rapid Search plan enough for a new Australian store?

For most new stores, yes. The listing sets the free tier at 2,000 monthly sessions but does not define how a session is counted — check the app's dashboard once installed. A store launching with modest traffic — say 30 to 50 visitors a day, with a portion using search — will likely stay under 2,000 monthly sessions for the first few months. The free tier also includes 5,000 products, which covers most starting catalogues. Monitor the dashboard and upgrade only when you consistently exceed the cap.

Does Rapid Search offer annual billing, and does its price include GST?

Annual billing is available on all paid tiers. According to the App Store listing checked on 31 August 2026, it is US$140 a year for the first paid tier, US$270 for the second and US$390 for the third. That's roughly a 17% saving versus monthly. The prices are in USD and do not include GST. Whether GST is added at billing depends on Shopify's GST registration for digital services in Australia — check your Shopify invoice for the exact AUD amount including any tax.
