What it computes
Enter the total charged to the customer, your costs per order and an estimated number of monthly orders. The calculator separates payment processing, any Shopify surcharge and the subscription. It shows what remains before and after your entered costs, then estimates the monthly result and orders needed to cover the plan. Compare the same basket and volume across plans. A lower card percentage alone does not mean a cheaper month: the subscription can outweigh the saving.
How it works
The processing fee is the customer payment total times the card percentage, plus the fixed transaction fee. For an external gateway, enter its actual percentage and fixed fee; neither value is assumed. The selected plan’s surcharge applies only in the external-with-surcharge mode. The exemption mode keeps gateway fees and sets the Shopify surcharge to zero.
Net per order subtracts processing and platform fees from the payment total. Margin also subtracts the costs you enter, including tax to remit. Monthly net is margin times monthly orders, minus the plan subscription. Break-even divides the subscription by a positive margin and rounds up to whole orders.
Prices below use monthly billing. Annual prices are monthly equivalents with the year paid in advance; they are not used in this calculation. Standard online card rates were checked on 14 September 2026. Figures are estimates before additional subscription taxes and provider rounding. Shopify pricing.
Examples
For a hypothetical 80.00 AUD payment with 30.00 AUD in costs, using Basic and Shopify Payments, processing costs 1.70 AUD. The margin is 48.30 AUD per order. At 50 orders, the monthly result after the subscription is 2,359.00 AUD; 2 orders cover the plan.
For the first basket, an illustrative external provider charging 3% + 0.30 AUD costs 2.70 AUD to process the payment. If Shopify's surcharge applies, it adds 1.60 AUD. If the payment qualifies for a waiver, select the exempt mode: the provider's fee remains and the Shopify surcharge becomes zero. These provider rates are examples, not a PayPal quote.
For a hypothetical 200.00 AUD payment with 80.00 AUD in costs, using Grow and Shopify Payments, processing costs 3.50 AUD. The margin is 116.50 AUD per order. At 120 orders, the monthly result after the subscription is 13,831.00 AUD; 2 orders cover the plan.
Limits
Enter the full payment after discounts, including customer-paid shipping and tax, because these amounts affect processing fees. Include fulfillment costs and tax owed in per-order costs to avoid overstating margin.
These are standard online-card estimates using monthly plan prices. Premium cards, currency conversion, refunds, chargebacks and additional overheads can change the bill. The calculator does not determine tax liability or exemption eligibility. Shopify documents surcharge exceptions, including eligible PayPal Express payments when Shopify Payments is active.

Common questions
Are these the current Shopify fees?
The table uses standard online card rates and monthly subscription prices checked on 14 September 2026. Your actual bill can differ because of card type, taxes, currency conversion, refunds or provider rounding. Check your account before making a plan change.
Why does a third-party gateway cost more?
An external provider can incur both its processing fee and Shopify’s plan surcharge. Exceptions exist, including eligible PayPal Express payments with Shopify Payments active. Enter the provider’s real rates and select the exemption only if it applies.
