Most app developers price in USD, and Shopify bills in your store currency using a conversion spread Shopify does not publish. After that spread, plus GST where it applies, a US$20 app lands closer to A$35 a month. A new Australian store should budget A$150–$250 a month in apps once trials end, and review the list every quarter. Shopify's Australian pricing page, checked on 6 August 2026, lists Basic at A$56 a month on monthly billing — and that's before a single app is installed. Shopify plans, pricing and features change; always verify the current details on shopify.com before deciding. Most people searching for this don't want a tour of the App Store. They want to know what leaves their bank account each month, and why the number is always higher than the receipt suggests. If you're setting up for the first time, our [Shopify Australia: set up your store step by step](https://aussiestoreguides.com/shopify-australia-setup-guide/) walks through the platform itself. This guide is the layer above: the apps, the conversion, the GST, and the quiet overages that turn a A$20 subscription into A$35. The median monthly app spend for Australian stores is not published. Shopify does not release it, and no Australian statistics office tracks it. So we work from the components instead: the USD list price, Shopify's conversion spread, GST, and the surcharge a third-party gateway drags in. Add them up and you get the real bill. ## Table of contents - [The real cost of Shopify apps isn't the sticker price](#usd-sticker-price-isnt-the-price) - [GST on app subscriptions: claim it or you're paying it](#gst-on-app-subscriptions) - [The apps an Australian store actually needs](#apps-australian-store-needs) - [Why 'free' apps are a feature teaser, not a plan](#free-apps-feature-teaser) - [When a payment app triggers a Shopify surcharge](#payment-app-shopify-surcharge) - [Your Shopify app costs in year one: a budget that works](#year-one-app-budget) - [Audit your app subscriptions every quarter](#audit-app-subscriptions-quarterly) - [Frequently asked questions](#frequently-asked-questions) - [Sources](#sources) ## The real cost of Shopify apps isn't the sticker price Open any listing in the Shopify App Store and you'll see a monthly figure in US dollars. That's the number the developer chose. It is not the number that leaves your Australian bank account. Shopify bills app charges in your store's currency, but the conversion uses a spread Shopify does not publish. Based on what merchants report, the spread sits around 3–5 % above the mid-market rate. Then GST may apply on top. So a US$20 app at an exchange rate of roughly 0.66 becomes A$30 before the spread, A$31–$32 after it, and A$34–$35 with GST. That's a 70–75 % markup on the sticker. Not because anyone is gouging, but because three layers of cost sit between the list price and your statement. The App Store itself acknowledges this. Listings note that charges are billed in USD and recurring charges cycle every 30 days. Shopify's [pricing page for Australia](https://shopify.pxf.io/WOzLvA?subId1=aussiestoreguides.com&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.shopify.com%2Fau%2Fpricing), checked on 6 August 2026, lists the Basic plan at A$56 a month on monthly billing or A$42 on annual. Annual saves roughly 25 %, and the same logic applies to apps billed yearly where the developer offers it. Heads up: this guide uses Shopify affiliate links. Sign up through one and we are paid a commission, and you pay exactly the same as you would otherwise. ## GST on app subscriptions: claim it or you're paying it Since 1 July 2017, GST applies to online sales of apps, software and software maintenance supplied to Australian consumers by non-resident businesses, according to the [Australian Taxation Office](https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/international-tax-for-business/gst-for-non-resident-businesses/gst-on-imported-services-and-digital-products) (2025). That covers most Shopify apps, since the developers are overseas. Whether GST appears on the charge depends on whether the developer is registered for GST in Australia. If they are, you'll see it on the invoice. If they're not, the ATO's rules for non-resident merchants and electronic distribution platform operators may still require registration, charging and lodging — but the mechanics land on the developer, not you. If your store is GST-registered with an ABN, you can claim the GST back as an input tax credit on your business activity statement. If you're not registered, you're wearing the 10 %. Registration is compulsory once your GST turnover reaches A$75,000. The ATO confirms that software subscription fees for accounting, point of sale, and inventory management are operating expenses. You can claim them in the year incurred, per the [ATO's deductions for digital product expenses](https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/income-deductions-and-concessions/income-and-deductions-for-business/deductions/deductions-for-digital-product-expenses) (2026). You can only claim the portion that relates to running your business, so a half-personal subscription won't fly. For more detail on GST mechanics on your store, see our [GST on your Shopify store: an Australian guide](https://aussiestoreguides.com/shopify-gst-australia/). ## The apps an Australian store actually needs Not every app is optional. Some solve a compliance or logistics problem that would cost more to handle manually. Others are nice-to-haves that look essential in the App Store and aren't. Here's a typical starter stack for an Australian store, with the true AUD cost after Shopify's FX spread and GST. | App and local role | USD list price | Est. true AUD/month | Our verdict | |---|---|---|---| | Australia Post shipping (live rates, labels, tracking) | Free to US$49 | A$0–A$80 | Non-negotiable for local postage | | Sendle integration (carbon-neutral courier) | Free to US$29 | A$0–A$47 | Worth it for parcels outside AusPost zones | | Xero sync (bookkeeping, BAS, GST tracking) | US$29–$59 | A$47–A$96 | Non-negotiable if you're GST-registered | | Shopify Payments (built-in, not an app) | Included | A$0 | Use this — avoid third-party surcharges | | Reviews app (Judge.me or similar) | US$0–$15 | A$0–A$24 | Free tier is fine to start | | Loyalty app (Smile.io or similar) | US$0–$50 | A$0–A$81 | Optional — add after first 100 orders | | Email automation (Klaviyo) | US$0–$45 | A$0–A$73 | Free tier covers up to 250 contacts | > **Our take:** The compliance three — Australia Post, Xero and Shopify Payments — are the only apps a new store genuinely needs on day one. Reviews and loyalty are marketing layers you add once you have traffic and repeat customers. Don't install them in week one just because the App Store suggests it. Australia Post shipping apps for Shopify are priced from free install to about US$49 a month, covering live rates, labels and tracking. Our [Set up Australia Post shipping in Shopify](https://aussiestoreguides.com/australia-post-shipping-shopify/) walks through the configuration. The ABS reported that in 2024–25, 32 % of Australian businesses received orders online, up from 30 % in 2021–22, per the [Australian Bureau of Statistics](https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/industry/technology-and-innovation/characteristics-australian-business/latest-release) (2024). More online sellers means more competition for attention — but it doesn't mean you need 12 apps to compete. ## Why 'free' apps are a feature teaser, not a plan Free tiers exist to get you installed. They cap orders, watermark the storefront, or hold back the one feature you actually need behind a paywall. That's not a complaint. It's a pricing strategy. But it means "free" is a trial, not a destination. A reviews app might let you collect 50 reviews at no cost, then charge per order beyond that. A loyalty app might cap at 200 members. An email tool might limit you to 250 contacts — fine at launch, expensive by month three. Usage charges are the quiet killer. Some apps charge per order, per email sent, or per label generated. A US$0.10-per-order charge on 500 monthly orders is US$50, more than the subscription you were avoiding. Always check the pricing card for usage line items before installing. The Baymard Institute's latest tracking puts the global average cart abandonment rate at 70.19 %, per [Baymard's checkout usability research](https://baymard.com/research/checkout-usability) (2026). Apps that promise to recover those carts are selling against a real number. But a free cart-recovery app with a per-recovered-order fee can cost more than a flat subscription once volume picks up. ## When a payment app triggers a Shopify surcharge This is the hidden fee that turns a "free" payments app expensive. If you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a surcharge on every transaction. According to [Shopify's Australian pricing page](https://shopify.pxf.io/WOzLvA?subId1=aussiestoreguides.com&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.shopify.com%2Fau%2Fpricing), checked on 6 August 2026, the surcharge is 2 % on Basic, 1 % on Grow, 0.6 % on Advanced and 0.2 % on Plus. On A$10,000 in monthly sales through a third-party gateway on Basic, that's A$200 a month — more than the plan itself. Plus is the enterprise tier, starting at roughly A$3,700 a month on negotiated contracts, and it carries the lowest surcharge at 0.2 %. Most new stores won't be on Plus, but the tier exists if you outgrow Advanced. The card rates on Shopify Payments are lower too: 1.75 % + 30c on Basic, 1.6 % + 30c on Grow, 1.4 % + 30c on Advanced, per the same page. A payment app that routes you off Shopify Payments to avoid those rates is almost always a false economy. Some payment apps — buy-now-pay-later integrations, for example — require a third-party gateway by design. In that case the surcharge is a known cost, not a surprise. Factor it into the app's effective monthly price before you install. For a full breakdown of plan pricing and transaction rates, see our [How much does Shopify cost in Australia?](https://aussiestoreguides.com/shopify-cost-australia/). ## Your Shopify app costs in year one: a budget that works Here's the planning figure: A$1,800–$3,000 in the first year, or A$150–$250 a month once trials end. That assumes a Basic plan, Shopify Payments, and a lean stack of four to six apps. **Three worked monthly bills:** **Lean (A$150/month):** Australia Post app (free tier) A$0, Xero A$50, Judge.me (free) A$0, Klaviyo (free tier) A$0, Smile.io (free) A$0. Total: A$50 in apps, plus A$56 plan, plus processing. You're under budget because you're on free tiers. **Typical (A$200/month):** Australia Post app US$20 (A$35), Xero A$50, Judge.me (paid) US$15 (A$24), Klaviyo US$20 (A$35), Smile.io (free) A$0. Total: A$144 in apps, plus A$56 plan. With processing and the occasional usage overage, you land near A$200. **Heavy (A$250+/month):** Australia Post app US$49 (A$80), Xero A$50, Loox US$15 (A$24), Klaviyo US$45 (A$73), Smile.io US$50 (A$81). Total: A$308. You've overshot the budget. This is where the quarterly audit earns its keep. The Small Business Technology Investment Boost allowed an extra 20% deduction on eligible digital spend up to A$100,000 per year (a maximum bonus of A$20,000). This ended on 30 June 2023, per [business.gov.au](https://business.gov.au/grants-and-programs/small-business-technology-investment-boost) (2022). It included software, e-commerce services and cloud subscriptions. Don't plan around it — it's gone. For context on how the platform itself is priced, our [Shopify plans compared: the real cost for Australian sellers](https://aussiestoreguides.com/shopify-plans-australia/) breaks down the tiers. ## Audit your app subscriptions every quarter App creep is real. You install something in week one to solve a problem, the problem goes away, and the subscription keeps billing. Three months later you're paying for four apps you don't open. **Our suggested quarterly audit checklist:** 1. Open Settings > Apps and sales channels in your Shopify admin. 2. List every app and its monthly AUD cost (check the invoice, not the App Store listing). 3. For each app, ask: did this app generate or save more than its cost in the last 30 days? 4. If the answer is no, check whether a free tier covers what you still need. 5. Cancel anything that hasn't paid for itself. You can reinstall later. 6. Total the remaining monthly cost and compare it to your A$150–$250 budget. 7. Repeat in 90 days. Expect to cut 20–40 % in your first two audits. Most stores carry two or three apps that were useful for a week and never cancelled. The ACCC's March 2021 interim report identified the Apple App Store and Google Play Store as the two key app marketplaces in Australia, per the [ACCC](https://www.accc.gov.au/about-us/publications/serial-publications/digital-platform-services-inquiry-2020-25-reports/digital-platform-services-inquiry-march-2021-interim-report) (2020). Shopify's App Store has the same dynamic: discovery is easy, cancellation is buried. The ATO's example involves a A$1,500 payment for customised software. This is allocated to a software development pool and claimed over five years, per the [ATO](https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/income-deductions-and-concessions/income-and-deductions-for-business/deductions/deductions-for-digital-product-expenses) (2026). This reminds us that not all software spend is a simple month-to-month operating expense. If you commission custom app development, talk to your accountant about pooling. Baymard found the average large-scale e-commerce site has 32 checkout improvements to make, and better checkout UX can raise conversion by 35 %, per [Baymard](https://baymard.com/research/checkout-usability) (2026). Apps that slow your checkout hurt that number. Another reason to audit. Yes, if the developer is registered for GST in Australia. Since 1 July 2017, GST applies to imported digital products and software supplied to Australian consumers. If your business is GST-registered, you claim the GST component back as an input tax credit on your BAS lodgement. If you're not registered, you absorb the 10 % with no recourse. ### How much do USD billing and exchange rates add to the real AUD cost? Shopify converts app charges using its own spread, which it does not publish. Based on merchant reports, the spread adds 3–5 % above the mid-market rate. On a US$20 app, that's roughly A$1–$2 a month before GST. Over a year, across six apps, it adds A$70–$200 you won't see in any single invoice line. ### What should a new Australian store budget for Shopify apps in year one? Plan for A$150–$250 a month once free trials end, or A$1,800–$3,000 across the first year. Month one is usually lower because most apps offer a 7–14 day trial. The bill ramps in months two and three as trials expire and usage charges on per-order apps kick in. ### Which apps are non-negotiable for an Australian Shopify store? Australia Post or Sendle for postage, Xero for bookkeeping and GST, and Shopify Payments for processing. Everything else — reviews, loyalty, upsell, email — is a marketing layer you add once you have order volume to justify it. A store doing 20 orders a month doesn't need a loyalty program. ### Can too many Shopify apps slow down my store? Yes. Each app injects scripts into your theme, and excess scripts drag page-load times. Slow pages hurt conversion and Core Web Vitals. If your store feels sluggish, the app list is the first place to look, not the theme. One heavy app can outweigh three lightweight ones. ### Does the Shopify Starter plan include app access? The Starter plan, roughly A$7–$10 a month, supports social selling and link-in-bio only, not a full shopfront. App access is limited and most integrations won't function without a proper online store. If you need the App Store, you're on Basic or above. ## Sources 1.
